Executive Dean’s Lecture Series Creative Arts Lecture

Rethinking Life through Art
Presented by Oron Catts, University of Western Australia

The cultural understandings of what life is and what we are doing in it are lagging behind the actualities of scientific and engineering processes. Our uncertainties about what ‘life’ is exacerbates the crisis in both humanities and sciences and we now face an urgent need to scrutinise and rethink both the crisis of sustainability and our treatment of the (nonhuman) other.

This lecture will discuss how artists are helping us to rethink what life is and methods employed to deal with life as both a raw material and an ever contestable subject of manipulation. Looking at all levels of life from the molecular to the ecological; Oron Catts will address the need to develop a new cultural language when words seem to be no longer appropriate.

Oron Catts is an artist, researcher and curator and considered a leader in biological art undertaking. As the founding Director of SymbioticA, an artistic research centre at The University of Western Australia, his work reaches beyond the confines of art, providing inspiration in areas as diverse as design, architecture, ethics, textiles and food. Catts has also been a Research Fellow in Harvard Medical School, a visiting Scholar at Stanford University and visiting Professor at the Royal College of Arts in London.
